What Is LIHEAP?

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federally funded program designed to help low-income households manage their home energy costs. In Florida, where summer cooling bills can be punishing, LIHEAP provides direct financial assistance to help families keep the lights on and the air conditioning running.

Florida's LIHEAP program is administered by the Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) through a network of local Community Action Agencies.

Types of LIHEAP Assistance Available

Home Energy Assistance

A one-time payment applied directly to your utility account to help cover past-due balances or offset upcoming bills.

Crisis Assistance

If your household faces an energy emergency — such as a disconnection notice or broken cooling system during extreme heat — you may qualify for emergency crisis assistance covering:

  • Past-due utility balances to prevent disconnection
  • Deposits required to restore disconnected service
  • Emergency repair or replacement of heating/cooling equipment

Weatherization Assistance

Florida also operates a Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) that provides free home improvements such as insulation, weather stripping, and HVAC upgrades.

What should I do if my LIHEAP application is denied?
